In
1995
it became apparent that there would be changes to the
regulation of the Canadian Seed Industry. Talk of privatization of
certain services provided by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (C.F.I.A.)
resulted in the formation of the Canadian Seed Institute (C.S.I.) in
1996. This institution regulates Registered Seed Establishments,
Bulk Storage Facilities and Seed Laboratories. The C.S.I. chose to
base its quality system on the ISO Quality System.
Canadian Seed
Coaters decided to seek ISO 9002:1994 registration while the
national regulatory bodies were going through transition. This
enabled us to assure our customers of a continued high standard of
coating quality during this period and beyond.
The process to gain ISO 9002:1994 registration took a year and a
half and was achieved with the full cooperation of management and
staff. All staff members were interviewed and asked to describe
their job and the paperwork associated with it. |
Manuals were drafted from these
conversations and were reviewed and approved by those directly
involved in that area of the system.
Once
approved they were incorporated into the Quality Manual, Procedures
Manual, Work Instructions Manual and Quality Forms Manual.
ISO9002:1994 registration was achieved in April, 1997 following an
external audit. Canadian Seed Coaters was proud to become the first
Canadian seed coating company to achieve ISO 9002:1994 registration.
An ISO 9002:1994 registration is not a static
event. In order to continue to achieve external accreditation the
system must be shown to be of use to the business. Canadian Seed
Coaters continues to use this system to ensure its customers of a
high quality product through internal audits and an
annual external audit.
The Canadian Seed Institute recognizes this system and the results
of the external audit.
Canadian Seed Coaters will continue to produce a consistent, high
quality product based on its ISO9002:1994 registration and the
subsequent upgrade to ISO9001:2000 in 2003. In addition
Canadian Seed Coaters ensures that all its major coating material suppliers are
ISO registered as a prerequisite to doing business with them. |
